Col. Gaddafi’s Son Looks Worried…And so he should.
As the protests hit Tripoli, that beautiful Libyan city, Gaddafi’s son warned of civil war if order was not enforced. Well, yes. Naturally. I think he is failing to acknowledge the reasons behind this unrest. Lybia aren’t jumping on the back of Egypt and Tunisia‘s unrest, but they are using that liberating support of their neighbours to make the points they have wanted to say all along, but were quashed along the way.
“Muammar Gaddafi‘s son went on Libyan TV to defend his father’s 41-year rule of Libya as protests spread to the capital Tripoli.
The most violent scenes so far of the wave of unrest sweeping the Arab world were seen as Gaddafi relied on brute force to crush what began last week as peaceful protests but now threaten his regime.
After a bloody crackdown that saw troops and mercenaries shooting unarmed demonstrators in the country’s second city of Benghazi, the death toll rose to more than 230.”
We see a heavy handed approach here to the threat that is democracy. It’s about time the rest of the world supported the motive behind the unrest here though perhaps not their means of achieving it.
“There is a plot against Libya,” said Saif, blaming “an Islamic group with a military agenda” for the bloodshed in Benghazi. Libya would see “rivers of blood”, an exodus of foreign oil companies and occupation by “imperialists” if the violence continued, he said.” This only reminds me that it is a less westernised version of the Bush ‘reign’. By that I mean, “lets call it something threatening and terrorist related, that’ll justify our heavy handed response”.
Not a chance I believe either Gaddafi or Bush I’m afraid. There may be elements of truth in all parties here, but I think those in power should know better and have more respect for the lives they ‘look after’ and ‘protect’.
